6616. Lees, J. L. March 18. Arithmetic, teaching.- Relates to an apparatus consisting of sets of pellets for demonstrating the metric system. Each pellet weighs preferably one gram and may be of metal &c. in the shape of a ball or other suitable form, and each set contains as many pellets as it weighs grams. The apparatus comprises :-One pellet, two sets of two pellets, one set of five in a row, one set of ten in a row, two sets of twenty in two rows of ten each, one set of fifty in five rows of ten, one set of a hundred. Fig. 7, two sets of two hundred formed by two hundred squares superimposed, one set of five hundred formed in the same way, and one or more sets of a thousand each forming a cube. The rows of pellets may be cast integral and adjacent rows may be similarly made, or the pellets may be threaded or pinned together, and cross-rows in a similar manner. Those sets of cubic form may be fastened by two or more pins rising from the bottom square in the interstices between the pellets, so that the different layers may be separated. The sets of two hundred pellets may have the two layers integral or separate and secured together, and those of five hundred and a thousand may be made entire, solid or hollow, so as to show only the external pellets. In this way multiples and submultiples of a kilogram may be demonstrated.
