Abstract
5477. McCracken, A. E. March 5. Seats and seat backs.-Relates to improvements in the foldable or collapsable seats or chairs described in Specification No. 23,070, A.D. 1903, for use on tramcars &c. and in parks, gardens, &c. The frame A supports a seat made in three parts B', B<2>, hinged at b<1>, b<2>, and a fixed part B<3>. The levers G are pivoted at one end to a shaft F and at the other end to lugs B' on the bottom of the seat flaps. The two arms C' supporting the backrest C are pivoted to the shaft F and to the frame A by a radius bar or bars E so that moving the back-rest from a vertical to an inclined position causes the shaft to fall in the slots A', thereby rotating the flaps into the flat position. When the seat is not in use, the flaps are kept folded by a stretched spiral spring attached to the shaft bearing and the bottom of the seat frame. A modification is described in which the shaft F is raised or lowered by means of cam-grooves formed in the arms C<1>.
