Abstract

4591. Taylor, E. Z. Feb. 24. Printing in several colours; bronzing.-Relates to a rotary web machine for printing labels and the like in two or more colours, for bronzing parts of the design if required, and for cutting up and delivering the printed labels. A number of forme cylinders d, with their inking-rollers, are adjustably arranged round an impression cylinder b so that any forme can be moved away from the cylinder b when required. The paper passes from a reel over guide-rollers and over a curved plate h, under a roller i, and round the impression cylinder. A weighted roller moving in vertical guides rests upon the roll of paper so as to keep it in tension. After being printed, the paper is cut into separate labels by an apparatus of the kind described in Specification No. 21,054, A.D. 1904. The paper is cut into longitudinal strips by circular cutting- discs carried by two shafts a driven by toothed wheels from the driving-shaft. The paper is cut transversely by a fixed knife n and a revolving knife m carried by a shaft l. The shaft l fits somewhat locsely in its bearings and carries cams which rest upon rollers below them. At the moment of cutting, these cams force the shaft l against the top of its bearings so that a steady cut is obtained. Between the cutting-discs on the lower shaft a are mounted cylinders having grooves into which project stripping-guides which lift the paper and prevent it from being carried round the shaft. After being cut transversely, the labels are pressed down by guides actuated by a cam into a receptacle provided with a travelling belt c which carries them away. The bronzing- apparatus D runs on rails and is pushed np against the impression cylinder when bronzing is required. The first forme cylinder d is then replaced by another cylinder which applies a suitable adhesive varnish to the paper. Bronze or like powder is supplied from a hopper p to the first of a number of rollers o. The surplus powder is dusted off by the succeeding rollers o, which are coated with a soft material, and falls into a movable box below the carriage D. The design is finished by an endlong movement of the lower rollers o.
