Abstract

3686. Botermann, H. Feb. 13. Stopping engines and trains.- Relates to an automatic safety device for stopping engines and trains in case they over run a danger signal, and consists in fixing a breakable body in front of the locomotive, which, when broken by contact with a piece on the permanent way operated from the signal, causes the steam supply to be shut off, an alarm to be sounded, and the brakes to be applied. A horizontal glass or similar tube r fixed in a socket q in front of the engine communicates by a pipe p with an air cylinder n, the pressure in which keeps the piston o raised. When the glass tube is broken, the air pressure is reduced, the brakes are operated through a pipe p<1> which is connected to the pipe p, and the piston o falls. This moves a valve i through a bell crank m, and opens a steam cylinder b to exhaust, thus exhausting a second cylinder d through a pipe c, and allowing the internal steam pressure to move the piston e. The movement of the piston e operates the valve h, shuts off steam, and sounds an alarm whistle f.
