Abstract
3561. Dawson, A. T., and Buckham, G. T. Feb. 12. Ordnance breech mechanism.-The firing-mechanism consists of a rifle lock, such as that described in Specifications No. 11,461, A.D. 1888, and No. 22,003, A.D. 1902, [Abridgment Class Small-arms], with or without a magazine, arranged so that an ordinary rifle blank cartridge can act as a primer, and is particularly applicable to the breech mechanisms described in Specification No. 19,026, A.D. 1895, No. 15,975, A.D. 1902, and No. 13,470, A.D. 1903. Fig. 1 shows the application to the breech mechanism described in Specification No. 19,026, A.D. 1895. A slide box C, detachably connected to the obturator bolt H, carries the breech-bolt casing C' of the auxiliary lock, and the firing-pin g is released by an electromagnet I, the armature c<9> of which is connected through a lever c<8> with the trigger c<4>. In a modification, a magazine J, Fig. 7, is arranged beneath the casing C', and the electromagnet, arranged in a casing C<xx>, acts through a twoarmed lever on the firing-pin. A vertically-sliding safety-piece D, Figs. 1 and 7, operated by the breech-actuating lever F, is mounted on the slide box C, and is provided with a spring bolt D' for engaging a cam-groove f in the lever F and with another bolt D' engaging a groove in a link E of the breech mechanism, a projection D<3>, Fig. 1, preventing the box C from turning from the locked position. The bolts D<1>, D<2> may be connected as shown in Fig. 7, so that they are simultaneously operated, when the bolt D' is drawn back and secured by rotating it. A safety-lever d<1>, engaging a slot in the slide D, is brought in the front of a projection g<2> on the firing-pin, when the slide D is forced downwards on opening the breech, and, when the piece D is completely withdrawn, the projection g<2>, by engaging a notch d<4> in the lever d', retains the striker until the piece D is replaced. In another form, the trigger is operated mechanically by an arm c<14>, Fig. 11, on a revolving shaft c<15> acting through a double bell-crank lever c<13>, an arm c<16> on the shaft c<15> being engaged by a handle or other operating-device on a non-recoiling part of the gun carriage when the gun is in the firing position.
