Abstract

1703. Kemmerich, W. Jan. 21. Steam-generator fireboxes.-The fireboxes of locomotive, portable, and other multitubular steam boilers are provided at the sides and front with water walls, and covered in at the top by auxiliary water chambers which may communicate with the main boiler. Settling-chambers and means for heating the feedwater are also provided. Figs. 1 and 2 show a locomotive firebox enclosed on three sides by water spaces S, which communicate with the main boiler by pipes v, wand with a steam drum d by pipes t. The upper portions of the spaces S are expanded to afford a larger surface for evaporation. The top of the firebox is fitted with cylindrical drums c, m which receive water from the main boiler through slots in the tube-plate r and communicate with the steam drum d and water spaces S. The tube-plate r, which is carried up so as to divide the firebox from the main boiler, forms one side of a settling-chamber b beneath the fire tubes. The firebox is supported by means of lugs l resting on supports carried by the locomotive frame. In a modification, Fig. 3, the top of the firebox is covered by a single flat tank n which may be connected to a steam drum d. Fig. 4 shows two cylinders surmounted by a steam drum and connected through openings to the side water spaces of the firebox. The cylinders, which are riveted to the tube plate, lie with their sides free but close to the side walls of the water casings. In another arrangement, the water spaces S are bent over at the top to join the cylinder which may be connected directly to the main steam pipe. The cylinders or flat water tank may be covered in with an outer tank 10, Fig. 6. The tank 10, which may serve as a feedwater heater and contains chemicals for the purification of the feedwater, is provided with side pockets in which sediment may collect. Feedwater may be supplied directly to the water spaces S or to other parts.
