Abstract
1632. Hall, J. W., and Scarf, F. Jan. 22. Rolling.-In a machine for rolling metal strips, the movable scraper-bars 8, 9 are lowered by mechanical means as soon as the end of the strip 5 is seized by the rolls 1, 2, so that the bar is bent, as shown in Fig. 7, and the scale easily removed. The stationary scrapers 6, 7 are fixed by suitable means to the framing of the machine, and the movable scrapers may be held on a crosshead 10 attached to the rod of an air-cushioned spring-actuated piston 14, Fig. 4, a detent 13, actuated by a hand-lever 38, holding up the piston until the strip enters the rolls. The piston is raised again by a handoperated lever turning a pinion 24 on the shaft 25, a rack on the piston-rod gearing with the pinion, and the tension in the spring 16 which actuates the piston is adjusted by turning the spider wheel 18. In a modified form of the machine, the piston is raised by means of a compressed-air cylinder, and the detent 13 released by means of a lever which is turned over by the strip of metal as it passes through the rolls. In another form, Fig. 19, the piston is both raised and lowered by compressed air, the shock at the end of the stroke being prevented by a barrel - shaped cataract cylinder 75. In this form there is an additional fixed scraper-bar 90, the movable scrapers 8, 9 being connected with the piston-rod 11 by a series of lever links 81, 85, 87, &c. The release of the detent 13 and the control of the valve for the raising of the piston may be actuated electrically as in the arrangement shown in Fig. 22. The metal strip on passing through the rolls is made to close the circuit containing the solenoids 91, 112. The former causes the lever 99 to rise and so release the detent 13. The latter controls a valve 111 regulating the piston 105 for admitting air to raise the piston 14 and keeps the valve closed until the strip has gone right through the rolls and the contact is again broken. The lowering of the scraper-rods might also be accomplished by means of a falling weight connected with them by a lever.
