Abstract
15. Darwin, H. Jan. 1. Incandescent gas or vapour lamps.-A gas, vapour, or like lamp or pendant is provided with a .primary and a secondary, or additional, air supply, and the heat radiated from the burners is utilized for heating the primary gaseous mixture and the secondary air supply. In the case of an incandescent gas lamp, the burners are provided with means designed to spread the combustible mixture evenly over the mantles which may be arranged horizontally, vertically, or obliquely. To the gas-supply pipe 10 is attached a primary mixing-chamber 13 which is perforated with holes 14, and may be provided with a rotatable and perforated sleeve 15 to regulate the primary air supply. The mixture passes down a tube 19 to a flat box 20, perforated, preferably, on the top side only, and is projected into a cylinder 18 or secondary mixing-chamber from which branches 21<x> for carrying the burners 30 are directed. The bottom 25 of the cylinder is perforated with holes 26, and an air supply, which may be regulated by means of a perforated disc 27 and handle 28, is mixed with the primary mixture by baffle-plates or gauze diaphragms 29, placed in the upper and preferably widened part of the cylinder. The burner 20 consists of a porcelain or steatite attachment of a conoidal, cylindrical, or other shape, and is pierced with holes 31 ; it is attached to the gas-pipe branch by means of a socket 32 and set-screws 33. The mantle 22 is secured to a porcelain or steatite ring 35 which engages with studs 37 on the sides of the burner by means of bayonet slots. The apex of the burner may pass through the crown of the mantle in order to centre and steady it. Globes 23 are detachably secured to metal caps 39 which rest on the tops of the burner sockets 32 and are perforated at 40 to allow the combustion products to escape. À A shade 24 may be supported by the globe.
