  • Treatment Of Steel In Its Molten State (AREA)

Abstract

25,794. Hadfield, R. A. Nov. 26. Manganese steel; chrome, nickel, molybdenum, and tungsten steels.-An alloy of manganese and iron low in carbon (e g., containing less than 2 or 3 per cent.) is used instead of ordinary ferro-manganese in the manufacture of manganese steel. A suitable alloy is that produced in the electric furnace. It is added, preferably in a molten state, to molten decarburized iron, both constituents being generally weighed beforehand. The resulting steel, which contains about À9 per cent., or under, of carbon, is run into moulds to form castings or ingots. Toughening is carried out by any suitable method, such as one of those described in Specifications No. 11,833, A.D. 1896, No. 5604, A.D. 1902, and Nos. 4981, 24,739, and 24,740, A.D. 1903. The steel, in addition to manganese, iron, and carbon, may contain other elements, such as nickel, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, and vanadium, in proportions varying from 0À1 to 30 per cent.
