Abstract
24,495. Korff, M. Nov. 11. Globes ; lanterns.-A globe for lamps, lanterns, and the like consists of a metal frame b with a series of facets into which are separately inserted hollow glass prisms, pyramids, or cones. Each prism or pyramid has three or more surfaces and three or more sides in its base. The prisms &c. may be wholly or in part smooth ; or the inner or outer surfaces may be provided with facetted, stepshaped, fluted, or similar grooves c, which may converge to the apices of the pyramids or may be parallel or perpendicular to the base lines. Prisms &c. with wholly or partly smooth surfaces may be provided with mirrors or reflecting-surfaces on the outsides of the surfaces themselves. The pyramids may be truncated, apertures in the truncated ends being closed by lenses, glass plates, short rods, or the like. Coloured or uncoloured, dull or transparent glass may be employed for pyramids &c. and end-pieces ; or coloured glass may be employed for the pyramids &c., and uncoloured for the endpieces, or vice versÔ. The inner and outer surfaces of the pyramids and the grooves in the outer surfaces may be ground.
