Abstract

Name and number plates.-A refracting or reflecting backing to a stencil adapted to be hung over a pavement at right angles to a building is formed with parallel prismatic ribs inclined to the horizontal, the higher ends being nearer to the building. Fig. 1 shows one construction in which a frame 1 encloses a stencil 2 and a prismatic backing of saw-tooth section, having the longer surfaces 3<a> silvered and the shorter surfaces 3b plain. Daylight falling on the stencil from the side either at the front or rear, is reflected or refracted by the backing to an observer in the normal front field of view. Fig. 2 shows another construction in which the prismatic backing transmits and refracts light from the rear of the sign, the ribs 3<c> in this case being regular and acute-angled. A parallel double-sided sign also is illustrated with an artificial light between the two sheets of prismatic glass, and the application to V-shaped signs also is mentioned. Artificial light may be applied in all cases. Specification 302,703 is referred to.
