Abstract

21,300. Shedlock, J. J. Oct. 3. Moving-stirrer apparatus.-Coal, coke, or a mixture of these substances in a divided state is mixed with gas tar, astatki, or similar material, and pressed into blocks for fuel. Other materials, such as lime, may be added. The mixing is performed in a closed machine in which the materials are at the same time heated by circulation of superheated steam, carbon dioxide, or other inert gas, by which the volatile constituents are carried off, leaving a pitch-like adhesive coating on the solid particles. The hot gases are passed into condensers and are afterwards reheated, any loss by leakage being made up. One form of the mixing and moulding machinery is shown in section in Fig. 1. The coal and tar are fed from the hopper A and tank E on to a revolving cone, from which they are displaced by the fixed arms F on to the fixed cone G, from which they are delivered by arms H attached to the cone C into the mouth G<1> where, with the worm I, they form a seal. The materials then pass from the cone J through a series of openings in the plates K under the action of the scrapers L. The openings in the plates are spirally disposed, and the arms L are mounted loosely on the square shaft. The heated gas is admitted between the plates through the pipes 1 and passes through the condenser 6 and out by the pipe 11 to be re-heated. If steam is used, the water is removed through the pipe 7 and the distillates through the pipe 8.
