20,384. Sharpe, N. W. H. Sept. 22. Exhaust - silencers. - An exhaust-silencer, for petrol and other internal-combustion engines in use for propelling cars, launches, and the like, is shown in Fig. 1. It consists of a metal cylinder closed at both ends having within it a hollow globular chamber. This chamber has holes in the bottom, and grooves round the parts in contact with the cylinder. The exhaust gases from the engine enter at the top, pass through the holes 6 out of the chamber at the bottom, returning through the grooves, finally leaving through holes 20 in the top of the cylinder. The chamber may be made in parts secured together by bolts or other means, or the chamber may be constructed as shown in Fig. 3, the gases leaving at the bottom of the cylinder casing. A further modification is to make the bottom of the latter chamber in the form shown in Fig. 5.
