19,144. Proctor, K., and Spencer, J. W. Sept. 5. Handles.-Relates to a method of securing pickaxes, hammers, axes, &c. to their handles. A socket a, Figs. 1 and 2, which is placed over the end of the handle o has two opposite slits b terminating in round perforations c. A corresponding saw-cut or split is made in the handle, and a hole is bored through the handle between the perforations c. The socket is secured to the handle by a wedge or key h, Fig. 3, consisting of a piece of metal bent to correspond to the saw-cuts and perforations in the socket and handle. The pick or other tool m is then threaded on at the smaller end of the handle. An additional half wedge g, Fig. 4, may be driven in between the two halves of the wedge h, Fig. 3. The wedge h may be replaced by two half wedges.
