Abstract

18,834. Threlfall, R. Sept. 1. Pressure gauges. -In a differential manometer, the pressures act on liquid surfaces contained in a U-tube or in connected bottles, the levels being determined by needle points and the difference in levels being read on an external vernier. The two bottles 1, Fig. 1, are connected by a siphon tube 2 provided with a tap 3, and the needle points are adjusted to the surfaces of the liquid by means of micrometer screws 12 which depress the indicating rods 7 against the action of the spring 11. The points are adjusted to the surface levels when the tubes 4, 5 are open to the atmosphere, and again when they are connected to the pressures the difference between which is required. The movements of the micrometer screws 12, which are read off on verniers, determine the equivalent height of the liquid column. As a modification, each rod 7 may be provided with a horizontal jaw 10, the distance they open or close giving a measure of the pressure difference; or the threads of the screws 12 may be cut accurately so that the amount of turning of each head gives the necessary indication.
