Indicating thickness of sheets. -Millboard and like machines are fitted with apparatus for indicating automatically when the required thickness is attained, such apparatus being also arranged to liberate the cutting-knife. As the moist sheets of paper are wound on the machine cylinder, a roller d is lifted, and acts through a pivoted lever e to depress an adjustable arm f extending into a casing b, this movement being indicated on a dial l, and also, by means of a spring pencil s, on a strip of paper wrapped round a drum r<6>, which is rotated continuously by clockwork, so as to record the working of the machine. When the required thickness is attained, yielding or liquid contacts n, h complete an electric circuit, which rings a bell o. When the circuit is completed through the contacts n, h, a current passes through the electromagnet x, which then withdraws the projection w<2> and allows the lever w to fall and lift the pawl v, the pressure on these being eased by the lower roller y pressing the segments slightly inwards in the position shown. The circuit to the electromagnet is made by stationary brushes bearing on rings on the shaft S, one of such rings being made of vulcanite to which a copper strip is secured in the position for completing the circuit at the required time. The cutting-knife apparatus may be mechanically released by adjustable projections set to act when the millboard is the required thickness. Several sets of apparatus are applied to the cylinder when it is required to cut the millboard at several parts of the circumference of the cylinder. If the cutting-knife is disconnected and the machine is not attended to when the bell o is sounded, the continued action of the machine causes another contact g on the arm f to come against a contact m, completing a circuit to a bell p in the foreman's office and also indicating on a board q the machine in fault.
