Abstract

13,828. Bartholomõus, R. June 20. Water-waste preventers.-A two-fold flush is obtained, the first with water at a higher pressure than that of the main, and the second with a lower pressure. The cylinder a, Fig. 1, contains two pistons b, c, which are connected by rods to two smaller pistons f, g working in cylinders d, h. A multiple-way cock k is so arranged that, when it is turned through a right-angle by the pull-cord, water from the main is admitted between the pistons b, c, thereby separating them and forcing the contents of the cylinders d, h into the closet to be flushed, a greater pressure than that of the main being obtained in proportion to the difference between the diameters of the large and small pistons. When the cock returns to its original position, the pressure from the main is admitted behind the pistons f, g, while the space between the pistons b, c is put into communication with the closet. A second flush is thus obtained, which is of a greater quantity, but of a lower pressure than the first. Fig. 2 shows the plug-cock in section. The supply enters at p, and can pass by a T-shaped port q, either along a passage r to the port s, and thence to the cylinder a, Fig. 1, or along a passage u to the port v, and thence to the cylinders f, g, Fig. 1, according to the position of the plug. The cylinders f, g communicate with the closet pan through the port e, and the cylinder a through the port x.
