Abstract

12,380. Holbrook, E. Aug. 1, A.D. 1902, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Shoots.-Consists of means for loading coal, ore, &c. into ships from railway wagons. The wagons are run on to a swing or like bridge 4, under which the vessel is moored, and they are emptied in succession into a hopper shoot reaching nearly to the level of the cargo in the hold, so as to avoid a free drop of the material. With the arrangement shown, the cars go on to the bridge on one side and leave it on the other, and a number of cars can thus be discharged without uncoupling. In a modification, the bridge is movable along rails carried on beams projecting from the edge of the quay, and each car, when empty, must return the way it came. The bridge is moved into alignment with the required fixed track by a hauling-rope, or by rack gearing, or otherwise. The shoot is telescopic, and is fitted with stop rings, inside at the top of each section, and inside and out at the bottom.
