Monotype and like machines.- Relates to machines such as are described in Specifications No. 13,891, A.D. 1897, No. 18,542, A.D. 1900, and No. 9325, A.D. 1903, and consists of means for stopping the machine when the end of a piece of composition has been reached. Fig. 3 shows a section through the driving-shaft 32, o n which is a loose driving - pulley 31 adapted to be engaged internally by a clutch disc or cone 33 splined to the shaft. A spring 35 presses the disc 33 into engagement when the machine is running. A washer 36 and balls 37 reduce friction between the spring and disc. A clutch lever 51, pivoted to the frame at 40, engages and operates the disc 33, and this lever is operated by a hand-lever 44, to stop and start the machine. A spring-pressed pawl 45 engages the upper end of the lever 51 and holds it in the stopping-position when it has been moved back by the arm 52 of the lever 44 engaging the projection 42 of the lever 51, or by the automatic means described below. When the lever 44 is moved upwards, its arm 50 engages a pin on the pawl and disengages it from the lever 51, permitting the spring 35 to engage the clutch. The clutch is automatically disengaged by a special perforation in the perforated strip, acting through suitable electrical connections to close the circuit of the magnet 26, which thereupon attracts its armature 53, and raises the end of the spring-pressed sliding part 55 of the armature, between the rim of the pulley 31 and a projection 41 on the lever 51. A cam on the edge of the pulley then engages the end of the part 55, and moves it and the lever 51 to disengage the clutch, the pawl 45 engaging and holding the lever. A second cam on the edge of the pulley 31 then presses the end of the armature down below the path of the projection 41.
