Abstract

10,338. Podworski, A., and Horodenski, G. May 6. Couplings, automatic.-Relates to the automatic double couplings with horizontally-moving bolts described in Specification No. 18,349, A.D. 1902. The frame d, Fig. 3, carrying the automatic coupling is connected by a pin c to the existing draw-bar a and the hook b, an opening being left in the frame to clear the hook. The cheeks f of the opening are rounded to permit angular movement of the frame d when passing round curves. The frame d is supported in a nearly horizontal position by hangers i, i connected to the ends of a spring g, Fig. 1, attached to a plate h, which is formed with a recess to engage the point of the hook b. When the automatic coupling is not required, the head d is lifted, and the plate h is removed from the hook b ; the coupling can then be dropped down out of the way. One side of the head d has a socket n, Fig. 3, in which a coupling- link p is held by a pin o. The other Bide of the head d has a funnel q to guide the coupling-link of the other vehicle into a position in which it can be engaged by the horizontally-moving bolt r. This bolt is pushed into engagement with the link by a spring s, but is held back by a flap 8, Fig. 1, until the link is in position. To uncouple, the bolt r is pushed back by means of lever v and an arm x on a rod y provided with handles at the sides of the vehicle. In order to make it unnecessary to hold the bolt r back while the vehicles are separated, the bolt r is arranged to be retained by a catch 13, Fig. 4, until the coupling-link has been withdrawn. As the link is withdrawn, it releases a lever 10, which is then moved by a spring 12 to disengage the catch 13 from the bolt r and allow the bolt to be pushed against the flap 8 ready for re-coupling.
