Abstract

9923. Groves, D. C., and Stanton, A. R. May 1. Acetylene. - Relates to means for generating gas for raising sunken vessels by placing calcium carbide in a tube, and allowing it to pass a valve into the vessel to be raised. The water is thus forced out, and the raising is assisted by means of cylinders filled with acetylene. Fig. 2 shows the form of tube used for introducing the carbide, fitted with the sliding valves 6, 8, the bottom valve being closed when the top valve is open, and vice versÔ. These valves are worked by means of the screwed spindles 10, and the nuts 7. In cases where the tube 2 cannot be extended to the surface, the carbide is enclosed in a vessel which is opened by means of a spear or cutter 13. The delivery pipe for the water forced out extends nearly to the bottom of the vessel and is fitted with a valve similar to the valves 6, 8. The cylinders 20, used to assist the raising, are shown in Fig. 4. They are sunk by admitting water and are fitted with similar apparatus to that shown in Fig. 2, and also with a similar delivery pipe to that described. They are attached by chains to the vessel.
