The ends of the rails A, A' are connected by flanged fishplates B, B' shaped to fit between the heads and flanges of the rails, and the insulation is effected by recessing the inner face of each fishplate for one half of its length, and filling such recess with vulcanized fibre or other insulating-material E. A piece of insulating- material F is placed between the rail ends. The securing-bolts C have the usual insulation G.
