Abstract
3934. Laurent, P. Feb. 19. Syringes. - Relates to apparatus employed for hypodermic injections and the like, and consists of a glass or other tube g, Fig. 2, containing the sterilized injection liquid p and compressed air or gas h. The tube is closed by a valve s of glass or other material not attacked by the liquid. A diamond scratch on the neck of the tube enables it to be broken and the previously - sterilized injection needle e in. troduced. One end of the needle is inserted in the flesh at the point where the injection is to be made, and a washer r on the needle closes the end of the tube until the needle lifts the valve s, when the liquid is forced through a lateral opening into the needle. Fig. 4 shows a tube provided with a compressed rubber stopper a held in place by a metal plate or capsule b on the neck of the tube. The sterilized needle is introduced through a central hole c in the plate b, and through a hole in the stopper, until a drop of liquid appears at the end m ; the handle f is then released, and,. the needle making a slight retrograde movement owing to the elasticity of the stopper,. the flow of liquid stops. The tube is then used as a handle, and the end m of the needle inserted into the flesh, the slight resistance of which causes the end n of the needle to advance into the liquid, and the injection is made under the action of the compressed gas h. When the needle is removed from the stopper, the aperture in the stopper closes automatically owing to the elasticity of the stopper. Fig. 6 shows the rubber stopper a held in place by an internal collar b on the end of the tube. For making large injections, a capillary tube i having at its ends rubber stoppers a and provided with needles e, is used. The liquid and gas are introduced into the tubes and the tubes stoppered in a closed chamber under pressure ; or, in the case of tubes with rubber stoppers, the liquid and gas may be introduced by a fine hollow needle. In drawing off the liquid from the tubes, the needle is sterilized before each puncture.
