Abstract

3371. Otto, M. Feb. 12. Disinfecting.-Linen or other fabrics are disinfected by submitting them successively to the action of steam and ozone. The Figure shows a form of apparatus in which two jacketed cylindrical chambers a are used in conjunction, but a single chamber or more than two may be employed. After the articles have been placed in the chambers and the lids b have been closed, steam is admitted to the jacket e through the cock k, pipe 1, and cock r, and into the chambers themselves by the pipe 1, cock i, and pipes h leading to channels f, communicating with the chambers by perforations p. Excess of steam escapes through perforations o, channels d, cocks l, m, and outlet 4. After the preliminary treatment, the cock m is turned so as to connect the pipes 3, 5, and an exhaust pump u is set in action so as to exhaust the chambers. Ozone, produced in a generator t, is then admitted to the chambers through the pipe 2, cock i, and pipes h. The process may be repeated as often as necessary. The articles are discharged into a receptacle j by opening the bottom c of the chamber.
