Alloys of iron and steel are produced by smelting the ore of the alloy metal, such as nickel ore or New Caledonia ore, in contact with molten iron ; or the ores may be mixed and smelted together, suitable fluxes &c. being added. The process is preferably carried out in a reverberatory or open-hearth furnace.
