Abstract

190,254. Mooney, D. J. Sept. 21, 1921. Planes, construction of.-Metal aeroplane wings of large size and deep section are constructed with upper and lower parts each consisting of spars, compression-ribs and contour-ribs, the two parts being connected together at the leading and trailing edges and spaced apart by isolated struts. The covering, which may be of sheet metal, is attached to the ribs and spars and may be combined with the leading and trailing edges. The covering may be of sufficient strength to form part of the structure so as to enable lighter frames to be used. As shown, a wing comprises upper and lower ribs c and spars connected by struts g and cross-bracing l. The struts may be round, oval, square, or rectangular tubes having longitudinal corrugations, tapered and reinforced where necessary and provided with enlarged attachments at the ends for fastening to the epars.
