Abstract

28,838. Crosland, E. Dec. 31. Racquets.-The frame B of a tennis racquet is made of thin steel, aluminium, or other metal, of channel-section with curled or beaded edges, as shown in Fig. 1. The strings are attached to the side and top of the frame by hooks R, Fig. 7, formed in a strip of metal P adapted to lie in the channel of the frame, the hooks passing through slots formed in the frame. In a modification, loops are formed by slitting and bending the frame itself. The lower ends of the middle longitudinal strings are attached to hooks F formed on a block A of wood or hollow metal. A screw E is fixed in the block A, and is engaged by an internallythreaded tube C, passing through the handle and adapted to be turned by a movable piece D, Fig. 3, which is arranged near the end M of the handle and is attached to the tube C by a pin N. The piece D is retained in any position by the shape of the opposing surfaces. On turning the piece D, the block A is drawn downwards, at the same time forcing the two sides of the frame B further apart. In this way, the whole' of the strings are tightened up.
