Hauling-gear for traction engines. - Consists chiefly in means for hauling or propelling the traction engine by means of an anchored chain or cable, comprising also the means for anchoring the chain, and is particularly adapted for field work. Fig. 1 shows the engine in plan. Through a pinion H, power is transmitted from any suitable motor, carried on the engine frame, to the shaft i, on which are mounted a spur-wheel 0 and a chainwheel K, so that either can be clutched to the shaft, and the other set free, by means of clutches o' and j. When the main traction wheels F, G are to be driven, the spur-wheel O is clutched to the shaft i, and when the engine is to be propelled by hauling on the chain, the chain - wheel K is clutched. The chain L passes over guide pulleys at L<1> and m, through a guide M, for placing the links, and over the chain-wheel K, from which it is lifted by the roller N. After this, the chain may pass round guide pulleys r, s, t, so as to be relaid in proper position for the next draught. The ends of the chain are secured to a number of spadeshaped anchors a<1>, with hooks at the upper and lower ends to receive cross-bars b, b<1> whereby the spades may be connected together by rods a', and the chain L attached as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
