Abstract

28,333. Brookes, A. G., [Northrop Loom Co.]. Dec. 23. Loom shuttles; shuttles, changing bobbins and the like in, automatically.-Relates to shuttles and automatic weft-replenishing mechanism for looms of the kind described in Specification No. 22,939, A.D. 1894, provided with a rotary magazine F whence the bobbins or other weft carriers b are transferred to the shuttle by a fork 22 supported by an oscillatory lever f<1> actuated in a well-known manner by a bunter c<2> on the lay, which strikes a block m<15> pivoted to the lever f<1>. The block m<15> is turned into its operative position, on failure of weft, by means of the kind described in Specification No. 22,939, A.D. 1894. The shuttle is fitted with a block 80, preferably a casting, in which is a longitudinal thread passage 82, contracted at its entrance by means of walls or bulges 84<x>. These wal s are slotted as at 86, and a felt or other pad 88 is placed in the lower parts of the passage 82 and the slots. A pivoted finger 91 is fitted to the shuttle so as to swing across the passage 82, its free end being forced against a pin 89 by a spring arm 93, which enters a curved slot 92 in the finger 91. When the fork 22 descends, a cam-piece 75 thereon causes the free end of the ar n 93 to traverse the slot 92, thereby lifting the finger 91 so as to allow the weft of the full bobbin or cop to enter the thread passage 82. After the fork 22 has returned, the arm 93 is released and allows the finger 91 to spring back into its normal position, closing the passage. , The weft is afterwards threaded into the usual lateral delivery eye s', during the first two or more picks made by the shuttle, after being replenished with weft. During the first pick, the thread is drawn through the whole length of the passage 82, and between two contiguous extensions 100 of the walls of the block 80 ; during the return pick, the thread is drawn round a horn 103 near the front of the passage 82, and through a slot s<5> into the eye s<4>. The thread is guided by a transverse pin 104 and a vertical pin 105, situated opposite the eye s<4>. In a modification, the weft of the fall bobbin &c. transferred to the shuttle, is positively inserted in the thread passage and delivery eye by a goose-neck lever pivoted to an arm, which is actuated by a bunter on the lay, and pivoted upon the pin about which the bobbin &c. transferring arm oscillates. The arm carrying the goose-neck lever supports a piece b of stiff metal having a downwardly-bent end for use in opening a lid which normally closes the thread-delivery eye. In a second modification, the shuttle has a plain eye and no curved threading- passages, such as are shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the thread being seized and carried into a position opposite the eye by a separate arm controlled by the transferring-arm, and then positively threaded through the eye by swinging grippers. The threaded end is held temporarily by the grippers when the shuttle is thrown through the shed.
