Abstract

27,141. Reuter, W. Dec. 9. Cranes; lifting-dogs.-Relates to travelling cranes more especially for conveying pigs, ingots, and the like to furnaces, introducing and withdrawing them, and laying them on the bearing- rollers of the proper rolling-train. The arm for carrying the ingot is attached to the vertical centre rod by a pin joint, the motor 2 being used for raising or lowering the centre rod by means of a worm and a worm-wheel, the hub of which is screwed and engages a screw 5. The screw is prevented from rotating by a key fixed in the liner 8, a long keyway being cut in the screw. The tubular extension 7 is connected to the screw by means of an eye-bolt, which passes through the bracket 6. The eye-bolt is screwed at its upper end, to which is fitted a plate, resting on ball bearings. A second motor, fixed adjacent to the motor 2, is used for rotating the extension 7, through the medium of a worm and worm-wheel, on a shaft carrying at its lower end a pinion which gears with the wheel 12, long keyways being cut in the tube 7. A socket 15 is attached to the lower end of the extension by the pin joint 16. To the rear portion of the socket is fixed a platform carrying a motor 19, which works the hydraulic pump 20 for actuating the pressure-rod 21, by which means the ingot is gripped. The arm 22 is separate ; thus it can be easily replaced when burnt or damaged. The motor 19 has a friction clutch for putting the shaft 24 in or out of gear, this shaft carrying a pinion which gears with the wheel 25, by which means the arm can be rotated so that the ingot may be placed on any of its faces. The upper portion of the fork 17 is chamfered or cut away slightly, as shown by the dotted line, to allow the arm 14 to rotate slightly in a vertical plane, in order to obviate danger should the arm strike against the furnace or other obstacle.
