APPARATUS FOR ERECTING POLES.
Application filed January 9, 1923. Serial No. 611,629.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. WARE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Oxford, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Erecting Poles, of which the following is a specification.
The presentinvention relates to improvements in apparatus for use in digging holes and. erecting telephone, telegraph, trolley, transmission line and like poles and which apparatus .is mounted upon a truck or tractor and is therefore portable.
Objects of the present invention are to provide for digging or boring the post-holes inalignment even though the location of the post-holes be comparatively inaccessible or remote from the road way and, even though the ground besloping or uneven to provide improved means for crowding or feeding the auger that bores or digs the holes even when the auger is spaced at a considerable distance from the truck or tractor, for example, in order to bore or dig holes in locations such as are last above referred to; to provide for the satisfactory application of the power of the plant of the truck or tractorito the work-of. drilling the post-holes and erecting the poles; to provide equipment for putting the poles in vertical position in the holes and holding the poles in such positionwhile the space around them in the holes is filled by means of mechanical equipment and Without the use of ikes and the like; and, generally, to provideportable equipment which shall be simple inconstruction, operable from the power plant of the truck or tractor, 1f desired, capable of satisfactorily digging postholes'in the position desired, and adapted to get the poles into vertical position in the.
holes and .to' hold them in that position whilst the holes are filled, 'itbeing of course understood that some or all of these ob ects may be omitted.
The invention will beclaimed at theend hereof but will be firstdescribed inconnection with the embodiment of it selected from other embodiments for the sake of illustration in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of portable apparatus for use in the erection of poles which embodies features of the invention.

The invention "will be first described in application to a Fordson tractor but it must be' borne in mind that the invention is not limited to that kind of a truck or tractor norto the utilization of the power plant of the truck or tractor although such utilization possesses advantages. p
In the drawings 1 is a' generally rectangular frame mounted on the tractor or truck, generally indicated at 3. Rising from the frame are standardsi4 shown to comprise members joined at their tops and mounted on the edges oftheframe 1. A T- frame is pivoted to the standards 4 as at 5, and this framemay be-turned about the pivot 5 by'means of aserew jack 6 interposed. between its head 7 andthe frame 1.
The jack is operated in both directions and is shown as lengthened and shortened by a hand chain 8 and nut 9 which is driven from the hand chain by the bevel gears 10. Mounted on the Tlrame is a tripod of which the shear legs 11 and 12 are pivoted to the head 7 of the T-frame and of which the leg '13 is extended and contracted and is pivoted to the shank 14 of the T-frame. The leg 13 is shown as extended and contracted by means of a screw 15 turntable by means of gearing 16 mounted in ahousing 17 and driven by an airmotor 18 to which airis supplied from a tank 19 mounted in the standards 4. The housing 17 serves to take end thrust in two directions and is pivoted to the member 14. 20 is an extensible and 'contractable arm or boom and it ispivoted to the rear standard 4 by means of bracket 21, Fig. 5, having-a pivot 22 for motion in a vertical plane and a pivot 23 for motion in a horizontal plane. 3. Apparatus for digging post holes comprising in combination a truck, auger mechanism, an arm projecting from the truck for co-operating in applying down draft to the auger mechanism, a cable extending upward and adapted to pull down on the auger mechanism, and means for operating the cable.
4:. Apparatus for digging post holes comprising in combination a truck, a tripod mountedv on the truck and of which one leg is extensible and contractible to position the apex at diiferent distances from the truck, a pivotal arm projecting from the truck and provided with means for adjusting its length to align its free end in respect to the apex of the tripod, auger mechanism at the free end of the arm, a cable for suspendin the auger mechanism from the apex oi the tripod, a cable for pulling down on the auger mechanism, and means for op erating the parts.
