Pistons.-In order to compensate for the irregular wear of a cylinder, the metallic packing of the piston is made in segments, which are pressed outwards by springs. The packing consists of an inner ring composed of segments c<1>, c', c<3> and an outer ring composed of segments d<1>, d<1>, d<3>, which may, in turn, be surrounded by other segmental rings. The inner segments c<1>, c', c<3> are grooved to receive a spring g of any stitable form, and may also be grooved on their outer periphery to receive projections on the outer segments d<1>, d<2>, d<3>. Semicircular recesses may be formed at the ends of the segments to receive a projection on a segment above or beneath in order to retain the segments in the position of breaking joint, and pieces x may be let into recesses in the ends of segments to cover the joints. The segments are combined between a head on the piston-rod and a cover-plate connected to the head by bolts. Two or more of such an arrangement of rings may be placed on a piston.
