Any suitable form of rock drill is mounted so that it can be swung in any desired direction to undercut &c. coal. As shown in Fig. 1. the two cup-and-cone connections C', C<2> and the clamp H on the supporting-bar I are used to form a universal mounting. The washer R, recessed on one side, can be turned to bind or release the swivelling connection in the cone C<2>. The drill is provided with a handle T at the back of the feed-screw hand-wheel M, so that the workman can control the direction. The cutting-bit K has radial cutting- edges and a taper socket to fit on the drill spindle. The wearing-part may be screwed on the socket. Fig. 10 shows a carriage which may be used in headings. The truck carries a horizontal shaft A, at the ends of which are clamps L embracing the standards Q. The drills are carried by thestandards and by the shaft A. The standards may be turned down about the shaft A on to the supports S on the carriage for transport, or, when in use, the shaft A can be lifted off the carriage and adjusted at the desired height on the standards. Another form for use in thin seams is shown in Fig. 11. The drill is carried on a support R<1> which is braced in position by jacks J, pivoted so that they can be laid down when the support is moved by a rope and tackle.
