4 Claims.
This invention relates to adjustable; supports landmore particularlyuto animproved adjustable support for. a drifter type rock drill.
Infdrilling rock, as in tunnel work, rock drills` are ofttimes mounted on a; portable carriage commonly known as a rock.drill jumbo," embodying a swingableboom pvoted ona portable base and carrying the rock drill. at its outerextremity. In such` drill supportsit is desirable to maintain the drill supporting boomgsteady.` duringthe drilling'` boom, an upright column orjack and meansfor ilrrnlysecuringA the boom to thescolumn; to maintain the boomsteady during, theY drilling operation. A furtherobject is to provide an improved clamping device comprising'clamps engageable with aboom and. with a columnrespectively and having a swivel between the two clamps, together with common operating means for firmly locking the clamps and swivel in adjusted position. A still further object is to provide an improved triple clamp having a common operating bolt for tightening or loosening the three clamps concurrently. These and other objects and advantages of the invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings there is Shown for purposes of illustration one form which the invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the forward portion of a rock drill carriage or jumbo with which an illustrative form of the invention is associated.
The portabledrill carriage or, jumbof 2f includes a truck frame` 3.adapted to: travel alongpa1 trackway 4 laidzonithe tunnel floor. Swiveled.' on the forward portion ofV the` truck eirame to` turn about a vertical'axis is .a support` 5 on which a boom l-ispivotally mountedatl for swinging,
movement in a vertical direction; A power jack device 8 is preferably employedtlo: effect vertical swinging movement ofthe boom, and thejla-tter carries at its-outer: end a` yokeshapedframe9 supporting` aV crossbar; lil.` A drifterftypehammer rock drill His secured td the crossbar; In and has a hammer'` motor |2ffor'percussively; ac.- tuating a drill` steel L3; A 'feeding` means em: bodying. a. feeding motor.` |.41i`s providedxforfeed-` ing the rock drill back and forth alongaguideframe l5on which the dri ll is slidably guided. A clamping device I6 is provided. for `firmly clamping the: guide frame I 5l to the fcrossbar. I 0. A vertical' jack or column Il may be' securedbeftween theftunnelV roofr and. floor in the manner shownmost clearlyinLlig. 1, for holding thedrill supporting boom Sistea'dy, during: the drilling operation, and the improved clamping device l. is provided for rmly, securing'th'e boomr and, column together..
, The improved adjustablev support; or'clamping device I comprises a pivoted clamp 20 (Fig. 2) having jaws 2l and 22 pivoted together at 23, and these jaws are engageable with the body of the vertical jack or column I1. Cooperating, relatively rectilinearly movable parts 24 and 25 of a clamp 26 (Fig. 4) are engageable with the drill supporting boom 6. The clamp part 25 has a conical or tapered portion 21 received in a conical socket 28 on the clamp jaw 22. A U- clamp 29 engages the outer clamp part 24 and a cross-bolt 3U passes through an elongated slot 3l in the clamp part 25 and through openings 32 in the arms of the U-clamp 29, as shown in Fig. 4.
An eyebolt 33 projects within a recess 314 in the clamp part 25 and engages the crossbolt 30 midway between its ends. The eyebolt 33 extends through alined openings 35 and 3B in the clamp parts 22 and 25 respectively, and also through the notch 31 in the clamp jaw 2|; and an adjusting nut 38 engages the outer threaded portion 39 of the eyebolt. When the adjusting nut 38 is tightened, the three clamps are concurrently moved into clamping position. When the eyebolt is tightened, the clamping jaws 2| and 22 are drawn toward one another to grip firmly the column Vl, and the tapered portion 21 is drawn within the socket 28 rmly to lock the swivel.
-At the same time the clamp parts 24 and 25 are the nut.38 is loosened, the three clamps are concurrently released.` Accordingly, when it is desired to swing the drillA supportin'gboom, the clamping device may be quickly released, and when the boom is in the desired position, the clamping device may be quickly adjusted into clamping position.
As a result of this invention, an improved adjustable support or clamp is provided which may be readily and quickly moved into and out of adjusted position. It will further be apparent that, by the provision of the improved clamping device, the drill supporting boom of the drill carriage maybe firmly held in drill supporting position. By the provision ofthe single adjusting element for a triple clamp, the three clamps may be concurrently tightened or loosened as desired, and 'since but a singlel element needs adjustment to effect clamping, clamping may be expeditiously eifected. Other uses and advantages of the invention may be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While there is in this application specically described one form which the invention may assume in practice,'it will be understood that this form-of the sameis shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modied and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit' or the scope ofthe appended claims.
. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
, 1. A triple clamping device comprising 'a pair of clamps having a swivel therebetween, and adjustable means including a single adjusting element common tothe adjustment of said clamps and swivel forV concurrently tightening said clamps and for locking' said swivel.
`2. A triple clamping device comprising a clamp having a pair of cooperating clamp elements, a second clamp'having a pair of cooperating clamp elements, one of said rst clamp elements having a socket for receiving a swivel portion and one of said clamp elements of said second pair having a swivel portion received in said socket, and adjusting bolt means common to the adjustment of said clamps and swivel and having portions l cooperating with *elementsA of both clamps for V,concurrently V'ti=;htening. saidf clamps and for locking said swivel.
3. A clamping device comprising a clamp having a U-clamportion and a cooperating crossbolt for adjusting the same, a second clamp having an eyebolt engaging said crossbolt, and a nut threaded on said eyebolt and common to the adjustment of said clamps for concurrently-f' adjustingl said eyebolt and said U-clamp portion tightly to hold said clamps in gripping position.
4. NIn combination, a column, a boom pivotally mounted for vertical swinging movement alongside said column, and means for rigidly ijixing said boom to said column in diierent relative positions including clamp devices between which' The following referencesl are'of record in the le of this patent:
