Abstract
21,901. Schmitt, P., and Fabre, C. Oct. 8. Secondary batteries.-The frame of an electric- accumulator electrode is built up of a narrow vertical strip e, Fig. 1, of lead, attached hori- zontal strips a of lead antimonide and sides plates g, h, Fig. 4, of celluloid, ebonite, or other non-conducting material cr of lead, lead antimonide, or other material which does not injuriously affect the electrolyte. The active material retained on the horizontal strips a between the side plates consists of grains composed of a mixture of lead oxide or other suitable material with sulphuric acid and glycerine. A paste of these materials and water is made up in a leaden vessel, is then dried without heating in thin layers, and is finally compressed, pounded, and sifted into the granular form. When the material is in position, the free ends b of the horizontal strips are bent into the vertical position to confine it. Small rigid plates are placed against these bent ends and the opposite edge of the frame. The side plates g, h are perforated, and are made double, with their perforations not opposite to each other, to allow access of the electrolyte to the active material without allowing the grains to escape. Perforated horizontal partitions i are placed among the material to keep the side plates parallel to each other. The terminal f of the electrode is connected to the upper strip of lead antimonide.
