Abstract

21,219. Pinckney, P. Sept. 30. Steering-gear.- Comprises electromagnetic devices for working the stop and throttle or reversing valves . of fluid - pressure motors. The apparatus comprises a series of electromagnets 5, Fig. 6, which are excited in succession and attract the armatures 3 on the arms 2 projecting from the valve-spindle 1. The mag. nets may be cased up airtight and act on the armatures through the casing. The circuits of the magnets may be closed by hand or automatically. A switch shown in section in Fig. 1 and comprising a number of terminals arranged in a ring 1 of insulated material'and connected respectively with a corresponding magnet is touched in succession by arms 2 radiating from the spindle of the handle 3. A pointer 7 worked by gearing 8, 9, 6 works over a dial 10. Electromagnets such as are shown in Fig. 12 may be employed to operate the valve of a steering-engine. India-rubber plugs 2 in the cores of the magnets silence the impact of the armatures 3 attached to the valve spindle 8. The coils 5 are wound between brass discs 4 soldered on the cores and covered by a casing. The apparatus is applicable to the engines described in Specifications No. 21,521, A.D. 1895, No. 22,310, A.D. 1897, and No. 22,259, A.D. 1900, [Abridgment Class Steam engines], and may be used for stopping or controlling an engine from a distance as from the bridge of a steamship.
