Abstract

21,170. Schilling, G. Sept. 29. Folding paper; delivery apparatus.-Relates to a machine for folding newspaper or book sheets, which may be coupled to the printing-press, so that the printed sheets are delivered on to the folding-table. The machine contains three folding- devices, each of which consists of a pair of rotating rollers. Two pairs a, b, Fig. 5, are parallel to one another and in one plane, while the third pair c', c<2> are situated between and above the other two, in a transverse direction. The folding-devices are provided with knives t, f, s. Above the folding- devices is arranged a slotted table d. The newspapers are printed double, the sheets being divided before passing on to the folding-table. One of the sheets, owing to the way in which the double sheet is printed, has to be inverted before being folded. The two sheets are first brought into their proper positions by automatically-working fingers I, II, III. The folding-knife s then presses the edge of the right-hand sheet between the rollers c\ c<2>. The sheet passes between the rollers, and is brought by the endless belts e over the folding-device b, the sheet being thus inverted and ready for folding. The two sheets are then folded simultaneously by the devices a, b and the knives f, t. In order to be clear of the table while the sheets are being delivered from the press, the folding-knives are arranged as shown in Fig. 2. As the knife s swings into a horizontal position, its pivot g<1> receives also a downward motion, which carries it through the slot in the table. When the apparatus is used for folding single newspapers or book sheets, the knife t, Fig. 5, is put out of action, and the first folding is effected by the rollers c', c<2>, and the second by the rollers b. In a modification, a pusher i, Fig. 9, shifts one half of the sheet forwards to bring it between rollers, which effect its inversion. The sheet is directed by guidepieces z<1>, z<2> and guide-rollers w<1>, w<2>. In other arrangements, one or both guide-rollers and one guide-piece are dispensed with, the rollers being arranged at an angle.
