Abstract

20,409. Knox, H. A., and Jones, J. H. Nov. 21, A.D. 1901, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Motor road vehicles.-The running-gear frame or undercarriage is composed of front and rear axles a, b united by springs c, which also form the reaches. In order that the increase in length of the springs under flexure shall not throw strain on the driving-chain or other connection by which the rear axle b is rotated, rigid arms or struts j extending from the motor shaft or countershaft g to the rear axle are employed. The springs also have a pivoted connection with the front axle a, and a similar connection combined with a longitudinal sliding action in bearings m at right-angles to bearings l on the rear axle. When the rear axle is in the same horizontal plane as the shaft g, the sliding action is not necessary. The swivelling connections at the ends of the springs allow any one wheel to pass over an obstruction without raising another wheel and without putting excessive stress on the frame.
