Abstract

16,436. Keith, J., and Keith, G. July 24. Compressing.-Relates to modifications of the air and gas compressors described in Specifications No. 14,057, A.D. 1897, No. 15,291, A.D. 1898, and No. 13,926, A.D. 1900, especially with a view to satisfying the requirements of insurance regula- tions. The compressor described in Specification No. 13,926, A.D. 1900, is modified as shown in Fig. 1. The whole compressor, consisting of a bell pump B<1> actuated by a water motor M, and a regulating-bell B<2>, is enclosed in an airtight casing A. The bell B' works over a cylinder B set eccentrically in the bell B<2> to leave room for the gas-exit pipe D. The casing N containing the valves of the motor is secured to the underside of the foundation plate by being screwed into the bottom of the motor cylinder M. The casing N. as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, contains both the main valve V and the auxiliary valve W. The ports leading to the main cylinder consist of fine cuts m made through the metal of the valve casing into an annular space m<1>. The space between the two ends of the valve V communicates with the pressure-water inlet. The large end of the valve casing is put into communication alternately with the pressure inlet and the exhaust by the auxiliary valve W, thus causing the cap-leather v of the valve V to open the ports m alternately to pressure and exhaust. The casing of the valve W com- municates with the pressure inlet by a passage w<2> and with the casing of the valve V by a passage w. When the valve W is lifted, the water entering from the passage w escapes through an axial hole w<1> in the valve. The exhaust water all enters the cylinder B, Fig. 1, overflows it, aod finally leaves the casing A by an overflow which may be trapped. The valve W, Fig. 8, is actuated by a rod W<1>, Fig. 1, a forked lever P pivoted to a spider Q which guides the piston-rod M' of the motor, and a tappet T and weight T' on the rod M<2>. Gas enters the bell B<1> by a valve H and passes from it into the bell B' by a valve G. The bell B<2> is loaded by an annular weight b<2>. The top of the bell B<2> is connected by a lever L with a cock I controlling the water supply. The lever L is pivoted to a lug fixed to the casing A and engages a fork adjustable on the cock spindle by means of a slotted quadrant. The casing A. Fig. 1, may be connected to the gas-supply pipe to prevent unsteadiness in the supply. The arrangement of the enclosing casing may be applied to compressors like those described in the other Specifications referred to.
