Abstract

15,632. Callender, W. M. July 14. Raw materials, treating; materials, fibrous; processes.-Relates to the treatment of peat moss or other fibres to render them suitable for papermaking and other purposes. Peat moss is saturated in water, and treated with bromine or its equivalent diluted with water. The bromine attacks the gummy substances surrounding the fibres, and renders them more soluble in an alkaline solution. The whole mass is then thoroughly agitated, and, after a small quantity of alkali, preferably soda ash, has been added, it is boiled or heated with or without pressure for some hours. The gummy substances are dissolved, and are drained and washed from the fibres, which are left soft, pliable, and well fitted for the manufacture of paper or boards; and also for use in certain textile manufactures.
