Abstract

13,992. Emge, W. June 20. Splints.-Relates to a kind of adjustable splint for use in defects of the human leg. The appliance consists of a base in two parts a, a<2>, which are hinged together, and a series of adjustable side pieces connected to the base. The piece h<2> on the left is rigidly fixed to the base, while the pieces h<3>, h<4> , h<5> are hinged thereto so that one or more of them can be folded outwards to allow access to the leg. On the right the piece k is hinged to a bar i, which is itself hinged at the end n and is capable of transverse adjustment by the hinge sliding on rods and by a clamp m which can be placed in any one of a series of holes b. The pieces l, l<2> are similarly adjustable transversely by holes b and clamps m. The hinge between the two parts of the base allows adjustment for the knee, and the parts are kept in the required position by curved racks &c. The side pieces may be connected by couplings q. Studs p are provided for bandages. A heel space is formed in the part a<2>. A cord or cords t, passing over pulleys u, v and carrying counterweights t<2>, are adapted to be connected to the patient's thigh by plaster &c. A cord s to be similarly attached to the calf passes over an adjustable pulley, and carries a counterweight s<2>. A clamp x serves for attaching the appliance to a bedstead &c. A reading or writing desk, shown in Fig. 4, may be fixed to one of the side bars by a clamp 6. The desk is adjustable in various directions by a hinge 2 and socket 3 &c.
