Abstract

12,042. Woodhead, W., and Orr, R. G. May 27. Separating or sorting fibres; carding-engines ; pro- cesses.-Ramie or other fibres are fed by an apron A to a pair of fluted feed-rollers B, and thence to a pair of feed-aprons U, formed of or covered with card clothing. The aprons C conduct the material to a carding-drum D, above which is a slowly-moving endless card sheet E. The drum D is stripped by a roller F, which may transfer the fibre to a second drum G, similar to D and having above it an endless card sheet H similar to E. The card sheet H is preferably arranged so that it will strip the card sheet E. and is itself stripped by a doffing - comb J, the fibre falling on to an endless travelling band K. The drum G and sheet H have preferably finer teeth than the drum D and sheet E respectively. To enable the endless card sheets to be properly guided over the carding- drums, they may be stiffened by means of wires, strips of metal, wood, &c., or stretched between suitable holders and guided or supported on suit- able bends &c. The drum G may be stripped by a roller similar to F, the fibre so removed being supplied to a suitable carding-engine. The fibre removed from the sheet H by the comb J is longer than that removed from the drum G, and may be supplied directly to the gilling and roving frame &c.
