Abstract

9900. Edgar, E. F. April 29. Water-tube boilers.-Relates to boilers composed of one or more sections, each consisting of two horizontal drams with vertical water tubes connecting them. Figs. 1 and 2 show a boiler having two such sections with an arched furnace between them, Fig. 1 being an elevation, half in section, and Fig. 2 a corresponding plan. The enclosing walls are formed of a cast-iron casing lined with asbestos and with an inner layer of recessed bricks H. The learmost tubes are divided off from the furnace by walls C. The furnace gases enter the tube space in front of these walls and pass to the back among the tubes, escaping preferably by two openings, a large one above the lower drum and a smaller one under the upper drum. Steam is taken from the upper drum at the rear, where the heat is least, and the feedwater is supplied at the rear of the lower drum. The rear tubes serve as downcomers. When there are more than two sections, the furnace is situated in front, and there is a combustion chamber between each two sections. When there is a single section, it has a combustion chamber on each side of it.
