Abstract

7657. Schmitt, B. D. April 1. Stoppering.-Stoppers or seals of the type shown in]Fig. 13 are applied to the necks of bottles, as in Fig. 3, and secured. Three forms of apparatus are described. That shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is adapted to a machine for filling the bottle with aÙrated liquid through a passage 34. The bottle is supported on a vertically-moving rest 27 and centered by a fork 54 ; it is raised by a treadle 31 until its mouth rests against the soft material 36 in the head 5. The stopper is placed in the head, where it is retained by the spring in its arms a until the plungers 13, 14 are depressed by the handlever 25. The plunger 13 actuates the forked plunger 14 through a spring 17, until the latter, having inserted the stopper in the bottle neck, is arrested by the seating, when the plunger moves along, compressing the spring 17 and forcing the bar c between the arms a of the stopper. Projections 12 on the plunger 13 lift the plunger 14. Fig. 5 shows a machine for stoppering still liquids. A sleeve sliding in a fixed cap 5 is depressed by a web 49. Its conical lower end 44 engages the neck of the stationary bottle, then the forked plunger descends into the bottle neck with the stopper, and finally the plunger 13 descends on to the bar of the stopper. All three parts 44, 14, and 13 are depressed by springs, which are compressed as the parts are arrested. In the third form, shown in Fig. 11, the bottle is raised against a stationary held containing the plungers and the centering- cone 50.
