MACHINE FOR CORKING BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,676, dated September 5, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that we,FR1EDERIoHW1LHnLn BoLDT and HERMANN EMIL SCHRADER, both subjects of the Emperor of Germany, residing ,at Hamburg, in the German Empire, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Corkin g Bottles, (for which we have obtained a patentin Germany, No. 13,186, bearing date April 2, 1880,) of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in corking-machines in which the cork after being compressed is pushed in the neck of the bottle by a reciprocating piston; and the ohjects of our improvements are, first, to providey anti-friction rollers to the corkcompressing jaws 5 second, to afford facilities in filling bottles with aerated liquids; third, to regulate the motion of the main lever by the action of a click to a toothed segment; and, fourth, to apply a combination of wedges for arresting the bottle-stand while the cork is driven `into the bottle. The part f of the vertical sliding frame f forms a Wedge, and is provided at its lower end with a projection 3. Another wedge 2, slidino; loosely within the column A, and provided with a projection,f4, which rests on the projection f3, serves to hold the lever h immovably by means of the linger t' when the piston p', attached to the sliding framef, commences to drive the cork in the bottle. The lever It is forked at its front part, and surrounds with this fork the narrow part of the adjustable collar m of the guiding-rod k, which bears the bottle-support l. The collar lm may be lowered or raised, according to the height of bottle, and fastened by theset-screw a. The main lever y is provided with a click, o, which gears in a toothed segment, q, in order to arrest the main leverg in any position desired. This click o is actuated by a connecting-rod, r, and drawn toward the segment q by a spring, s.
For bottling aerated liquids-champagne, Seltzer-water, or other similar drinks-ft cock, w, is connected with the mouth-piece t. The cone of the cock w. contains two openings, which serve to provide a communication ofthe channel o respectively with the air and the apparatus wherefrom the liquid is drawn. Therefore the said openings correspond with the bores @c and u of the mouth-piece t. rlhrough the boreuthe liquid passes to thebottle. When the cock zo is opened the second bore, m, allows the air to escape from the bottle. During the filling the upper part of the channel o is closed by the cork, to which eect the lever g is arrested in its proper position by the combined action of the click o and the toothed segment q.
The operation of the machine is as follows: Vhen the handle of the leverg is pressed down therewith also the sliding frame f is lowered.

Thereby the jaws a are moyed toward one another 1n consequence of the rollers y sliding at ward, the pointed end of which, penetrating between the front of the stand A and the finger i of thev lever h, causes the bottle-stand l to be kept immovably, because the lever h is hindered from swinging downward, while the distance between the bottlestand l and the mouthpiece t is xed by the height of the bottle to be corked. Before the handle of lever g is lowered entirely the latter may be arrested by means ofthe click o and the segment q in order t0 allow the filling of the bottle before corking.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we desire to clai1n,and secure by Letters Patent, is

4. In machines for ccrking bottles, the combination of the sliding fra-mef, provided with the wedge f and projection f3, the loose wedge f2,having a projeetion,f4, with the lever h, the finger i, the bottle-support l,fthe guiding-rod 7c, and the collar m, substantially as described.
