Abstract

7454. Pitter, W. C., and Stone, W. March 27. Culliper and like gauges.-The split end d<1> of a movable jaw d is arranged to slide along two steel guides b, the ends of which are rigidly secured in a fixed jaw a and in an end piece c. A central adjusting bar e, provided with screw threaded ends e' and nuts e<2>, passes through a transverse hole d<5> in an enlargement of the bolt d<2>, which is provided with a nut d<3> for tightening the jaw d on the bars b, e when the jaw has been correctly set, a spring washer d<6> at other times holding the jaw sufficiently firmly to the bar e to ensure that the jaw shall move with the bar. In operation, the jaw d is slid along the bars to within a short distance of the point at which it is desired to fix it. The bar e is then moved by slackening one of the nuts e<2> and tightening the other nut until the jaw d is carried to the desired position, whereupon the nut d<3> is tightened to bold the jaw firmly in the correct position. A spring f may be provided to facilitate the movement of the bar e, and Fig. 7 shows a spring and bolt arrangement d<8> in connection with the locking bolt d'. The end piece c may be replaced by the micrometer attachment shown in Fig. 5, in which the screw-threaded end of the bar e works in a split cone g<1>, which is secured by a set-screw g<3> to the cap i, and is held by lock nuts h in position relatively to the boss within which it revolves freely. A single mark is made on the boss in a convenient position relatively to the circumferential graduations on the adjacent enlarged part of the cap i, which is turned to effect the adjustment.
