Abstract

4886. Landsberg, L. Feb. 26. Cellulose acetates.-Acetyl derivatives of cellulose and oxycellulose are produced by heating hydrocellulose or oxycellulose with acetic anhydride at 40‹-90‹ C., in the presence of about 1 per cent. of orthophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, metaphosphoric acid or phosphoric anhydride, while stirring as long as the consistency of the mixture permits, and then washing the product with water and drying it. When oxycelluloses are employed, sulphuric acid may be used in place of phosphoric acid. The oxycelluloses employed may be those produced by acting on cellulose with potassium chlorate and hydrochloric acid, with nitric acid, or with bromine and calcium carbonate. Oxycellulose may also be produced by conducting a constant current of chlorine into a heated mixture of finely-divided cellulose, calcium carbonate, and water.
