Abstract

1510. Griffiths, E. M. Jan. 20. Surfacing and polishing.-In machines in which there are discs covered with sheets of abrading- material cemented in place, two discs as, a<6> are used on the spindle a<2>. These discs are clamped against the shouldered faceplate a<3> by a nut a'. While the abrading-material on the disc a<6> is being used, that on the disc a<5> behind it is being firmly pressed on, and the cement is drying. When the material on the front disc has been worn, a fresh sheet is cemented on it, and the positions of the discs a<5>, a<6> are reversed. The work is clamped on the table X by a slide c', which is moved vertically in the block c<3> by a cam c<5> with a handle c<6>. The block can be fixed in different positions along the bar c, which can be adjusted vertically on the bolts c'. The table is fixed to the sleeve b<1>, and is advanced by turning the hand-wheel b<4>, which is fixed to a screw b<3> engaging with a nut b<2>, attached rigidly to the bar b. A stop b<8> is carried by a ring b<6> clamped to the hand-wheel. This stop engages with a sliding-bolt b<9>, so that the table may be accurately returned to a previous position.
