Abstract

25,414. Stumpf, J. Dec. 12. Steam &c. turbines.-Relates to governing - devices for steam or gas turbines. The ring of admission nozzles b, Fig. 1, is divided into groups I, II, III by partitions A. The steam pipe g opens into a chamber d having ports i opening on to the groups of nozzles II, III, these ports being normally closed by spring- pressed valves k. The nozzles in the group I open into a second chamber e connected to the steam pipe by a pipe h controlled by a throttle valve m. The throttle valve is connected to a governor R, so that it opens when the turbine speed is too great, instead of closing as is usually the case. When steam is admitted to the turbine, it enters the channel d, raises the valves k, and, passing through the groups of nozzles II, III, rotates the turbine. If the speed is too great, the throttle valve opens and admits steam to the chamber e, so that the valves k close. The group of nozzles I are arranged to run the turbine without any load. By varying the valve springs l, or the size of the valves, they may be caused to close at different speeds. In a modification, a double piston valve is used. Each nozzle may be controlled by a valve k, Fig. 4, connected to a piston r in a cylinder u which is in communication with the governor-controlled chamber e. The piston device may be arranged so that the throttle valve acts in the normal, and not in the reversed manner mentioned above. In a modification, adapted to control one nozzle or a group of nozzles, two governor-controlled chambers.are respectively connected to the upper and lower sides of the valve-operating piston.
