Abstract

23,924. Mathieu, E. Nov. 25. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to change-speed toothed gearing, the objects being to simplify the mounting of the gear shafts, and to safety controlling-gear by which the action of putting one train of wheels in gear automatically locks the others in an inoperative position. (1) As shown in Fig. 1, the gearing is enclosed in a casing 1, and is of the kind in which speed changes are effected by sliding the wheels 9, 10, 11 along the shaft 3 by means of forks engaging in grooves 12, 13. In order to permit the casing to be made in one piece without interfering with the insertion of the shafts 2, 3, large apertures 15 are provided, which, subsequently to the placing of the shafts in position, are closed by plates 16 carrying the ball bearings for the shafts. (2) The forks for sliding the toothed wheels to reverse or to change the gear are carried by, and are operated by, sliding rods 18, Figs. 2 and 3. These rods are formed at the ends 20 with deep notches, with which the ends of leverarms 22 on a shaft 23 can be made to engage. The shaft 23 is supported by rollers so that it can be slid endways as well as rotated. By the endways movement the arms 22 are made to operate a sliding bolt 27, thereby unlocking one of the rods 18 and locking the other, while at the same time the lever arm 22 on one side slides into engagement with the free rod 18 and out of engagement with the locked one. The change of speed can then be effected by a rotary movement of the shaft 23. All the necessary movements may be effected by a single lever 36 adapted to be moved in two perpendicular planes so as take up in succession different positions in a slot 35 of the form shown in Fig. 5 through which the lever passes. The same result can also be obtained by means of a lever 36 of the construction shown in Fig. 6, jointed at 43 and movable in a slot 42 as shown in Fig. 8. This slot has three notches, into any one of which the double spring stud 51 can be pressed. The lever may turn about this stud as a pivot for effecting the longitudinal movements of the shaft 23.
